Assam: Adivasis demands ST status in one-month
Issuing a stiff warning to the Government over their demands for Scheduled tribe status, the All Adivasi Association of Assam has warned of massive agitations in case the demand was not fulfilled within a month.
The association in a memorandum to the Chief Minister stated that there as lakhs of people stated that they have been denied this status at a time when all their counterparts living in West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odhisa were regarded as STs. They lamented on the division along ethnic lines.
It may be reminded that the coordination committee of the tribal organization of Assam (CCTOA), which has been opposing the move to grant Schedule Tribe status to six communities of the state, urged the central government not to proceed in this regard.
Six communities of the state – Koch Rajbongshi, Moran, Matak, Tai Ahom, Chutia, and Adivasi (tea tribes) – have been demanding ST status.
